Holland Car P.L.C is a joint venture company established in 2005 by a Holland (Dutch) Company named Trento BV, Engineering and Engineer Tadesse Tessema of an Ethiopian National, with an initial capital of 11 Million Br., which is equally shared between the two partners. The company is the first of its kind in Ethiopia. The main objective of the company is to assemble environmentally friendly, fit for the weather condition of the country economical and inexpensive cars for the local and export markets Background Tadesse Tessema, an engineer by profession used to live in the Netherlands. He used to travel to Ethiopia now and then. He found out that there were demands for cars in Ethiopia. So he established. So he established a company named Ethio-Holland which imported used Lada cars from Holland itself. After a while he found out the negative impacts of used cars, like the environmental and technical hazards, limited employment opportunities for the fellow citizens, and the low benefits to the country and himself as well . Therefore he decided to assemble cars within the country. He tried to find a partner and fund to start with. He came up with a project on a joint venture basis with the Dutch company, Trento BV , Engineering and with the fund obtained from the Netherlands Government. The land on which the factory was constructed was obtained from the Oromia Regional State, near Mojo Town about 70 km, South of Addis Ababa on the main road to Djibouti. With the help of technical expertise from the Netherlands combined with the Ethiopian skilled manpower the first car was assembled under the name Docc (Dutch overseas car company) whose parts were originated from Turkish Automotive car Producer. Docc was an old Model of seventy's and there was speculation (uncertainty) that there might be lack of (un availability) spare parts in the future. The partners then decided to inter into an agreement with a Chinese Auto Manufacturing company called Lifan with the latest art of technology came out the new and famous car called "ABAY" after the multinational river which originates from Ethiopia, The River Abay. The Factory The factory was built on 20,000.00 sq.mts of land near Mojo Town on the main load to Djibouti. It encompasses assembly painting spare parts warehouse, and customs bonded ware house. It is spacious for loading finished cars and un loading spare parts. There are three modern painting ovens with highly qualified employees. There is a separate section for filling air conditioner gas for newly assembled cars and maintenance as well, offices cafeteria, shower and locker rooms for the employees. At the initial stage the factory was able to assemble only one car per day. But now with the facilities provided and everything remains constant, we can assemble up to six cars per day. When experience gained, we shall be able to assemble up to ten cars per day. Employment Opportunity One of the major contributions of investment is providing employment opportunities for the fellow citizens which alleviate poverty. In line with this, Holland Car PLC has employed permanently and 20 over 250 people temporarily for construction purposes. The majority of our employees are diploma graduates in automotive technology from different universities, colleges and TVET. They are young and energetic. They have been given on job training and gained technical knowledge from the expatriates the company employed at the beginning of the establishment. To assist the factory and to lead the company as a whole, at the head office level, the company is sub divided into five departments or Functional Divisions, namely, sales and Marketing, Finance, Administration Operation and After Sales Departments. After Sales Department is the department that handles spare parts, maintenance, and customer's complaints, It is well organized and staffed by qualified technical professionals to takle problems that our customers might face after purchasing our cars under sales and marketing department there are two show rooms on Bole Road at Getu and TK international Buildings. Currently, Holland Car is planning to assemble technically advanced cars under the names "ABAY Executive, AWASH Executive& Tekeze which is also named after another famous Ethiopia river. These models are modern, spacious and beautiful. The (T-capital) spare parts will be imported from a Chinese car manufacturing company named Jianghuai Automobile Co., Ltd.(JAC). JAC is one of the four largest car manufacturing companies in China. These brand new cars will be on the streets of Addis just after the Ethiopian New Year. Expect more in the coming years. Holland Car Plc was rated one of the 25 successful business ventures in Ethiopia in 2008, and 2009, it is wineer of the five finalists for SMME Award (Africa's Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises Award) due to is pioneering business Venture in Ethiopia. The history of MATADOR - Addis Tyre is directly traced to the history of Matador group and the former Addis Tyre Share Company. These two companies were independently tyre manufacturer companies in their respective countries. Matador group is based in Slovak Republic while Addis Tyre in Ethiopia.Matador is a joint-stock company registered under the laws of the Slovak Republic under the identification number 00 152 820. The company’s registered office is based at T.Vansovej 1054, Puchov, Slovak Republic. It is a leading financially strong European tyre manufacturer which was established in Bratislava, SLOVAK REPUBLIC in 1905. It was the first company to start manufacturing of tyres in the former Czechoslovakia. Matador controls a vertically integrated group of companies known as “Matador Group” that are engaged in various activitiesWhile Addis Tyre Share Company (ATC) was a sole bias tyre manufacturer company in Ethiopia for the past 34 years and was state owned until July 7, 2004. It had utilized the technology of Yokohama Rubber Company, with small shareholding had been technical advisor and technology supplier. The core business activity of ATC was the manufacture and sale of diagonal tyres and inner tubes. It produced exclusively for the Ethiopian market, where it held a 35% market share. The production range of ATC was divided primarily between passenger tyres (from 12” to 15”), light truck tyres (14” to 16”) and heavy truck tyres (20”).Matador, with the capacity, rich experiences in transferring technology and know-how, with the intention of eventually penetrating the COMESSA Market and Africa at large, accepted the offer for the Joint Venture. Then it entered into an agreement with the then Addis Tyre Company, sole Tyre manufacturer in Ethiopia, through the formation of the Joint Venture (JV). For transparency and successful marriage, this Joint Venture process had to go intensive and long process. It started in 2002 and finalized on July 8, 2004, after two solid years. Thus, Matador-Addis Tyre Share Company has been legally established with the specific mission to produce bias tyres related to the former Addis Tyre Company’s product range but with Matador technology, and radial passenger car tyres at the initial stages with the further interest of eventually introducing radial passenger, light truck and truck tyres. It is indeed a Joint Venture Company established on the basis of the Ethiopian investment desire point of view with the objective of technology transfer, capital – inflow and export of tyres. Accordingly, Matador has joined the JV with the contribution of technical-know-how, machinery and some amount of cash as working capital which amounted to USD 13, 899, 000 and export commitment and commenced its operation on July 8, 2004.As such the shareholding of Matador group is 61% and the shareholding of the Privatization and Public Enterprises Supervising Authority (PPESA) is 39%. Hence, the total registered capital of the Joint venture Company is 22,785,000 United States Dollar. On the Ethiopian side only fixed assets namely Machinery, Vehicles, Building etc. right of land use and good will were contributed.Since the formation, the Joint Venture has been producing diagonal tyres similar to the former Addis Tyre S.C. but with better technology and productivity. The Joint Venture agreement for the expansion of the Company is finalized in two phases. Hence, it enables to raise the annual production capacity from 233,000 pieces to 500,000 pieces of truck diagonal and passenger radial tyres. For further expansion, the Shareholders reached in an agreement for additional investment of $ 22 million. Thus, the production capacity will increase to more than one million pieces of tyres and enable the company to produce light truck and truck radial tyres.
